Diabetes is a chronic (lifelong) disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. Glucose enters the bloodstream when food is consumed. Glucose is the source of fuel for the body. The pancreas produces insulin, which moves the glucose from the bloodstream into muscle, fat, and liver cells, where it can be used as fuel. People with diabetes have high blood sugar, because the pancreas does not make enough insulin or their muscle, fat and liver cells do not respond to insulin normally, or both.
In Diabetes Type I, the body makes little or no insulin. Daily injections of insulin are needed. The exact cause is unknown; genetics, viruses, and autoimmune problems may play a role.
In Diabetes Type II, the pancreas does not make enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels normal, often because the body does not respond well to insulin.
PoieticsDiabetic Human Adipose Derived Stem Cells (ADSC) are isolated from adult lipoaspirates collected from diabetic Type I and diabetic Type II donors during elective surgical liposuction procedures. Human Adipose Derived Stem Cells (ADSC) from normal (non-diabetic) donors are available as a separate product. These cells have demonstrated very similar phenotypic and functional characteristics to that of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells. Diabetic Human Adipose Derived Stem Cells (ADSC) have been reported to differentiate down many different lineages including chondrogenic, osteogenic, adipogenic and neural. Diabetic Human Adipose Derived Stem Cells (ADSC) have been cryopreserved at primary passage. Pertinent additional donor information, including Body Mass Index (BMI), insulin dependence, and age of diagnosis may be available by contacting Scientific Support.
Cryopreserved PoieticsDiabetic Human Adipose Derived Stem Cells (ADSC) are guaranteed through 5 passages, to express CD13, CD29, CD44, CD73, CD90, CD105, and CD166 and to not express CD14, CD31, and CD45. All cells test negative for mycoplasma, bacteria, yeast, and fungi. HIV-1, hepatitis B and hepatitis C are not detected for all donors and/or cell lots. A Certificate of Analysis is provided for each cell lot purchased.

Chondrogenic: hMSC Chondrogenic Differentiation BulletKitMedium, with the addition of TGF-β3 (provides a differentiation medium appropriate to induce chondrogenic differentiation of human adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells into mature, functionally active chondrocytes; Each bottle of the hMSC Chondrogenic Differentiation BulletKitMedium, with the addition of TGF-β3 (sold separately), contains enough differentiation medium to fully differentiate approximately 12.5 million human adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells [approximately 25 micropellets] into mature, functionally active chondrocytes).
Osteogenic: hMSC Osteogenic Differentiation BulletKitMedium (provides a differentiation medium appropriate to induce osteogenic differentiation of human adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells into mature, functionally active osteoblasts; Each bottle of the hMSC Osteogenic Differentiation BulletKitMedium contains enough differentiation medium to fully differentiate approximately 200,000 human adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells [approximately 20 wells in a 24-well plate format] into mature, functionally active osteoblasts).
