The reagents were made against isolate B2 of Verticillium dahliae (2). They are suitable to detect isolates of V. dahliae, V. albo-atrum and V. tricorpus in ornamentals (i.e., rose, chrysanthemum, pelargonium), vegetables (i.e., tomato, celery), potatoes, and fruit trees (i.e., apple, maple) in DAS-ELISA (1). Other species within the genus Verticillium did generally not cross-react. As far as the application in roses and chrysanthemums (the most studied cases) concern, no cross-reactions ocurred with six other fungi isolated. Actually, no cross-reactions were observed with isolates of Fusarium spp., Alternaria spp., Phomopsis spp., and most isolates of Penicillium spp. and Botrytis cinerea.

The distribution of the pathogen in plants often is irregular; therefore, several samples of a plant must be analyzed. In roses and chrysanthemums, reactions often are strongest in the lower parts of the stems, that preferentially are crushed with a hammer and homogenized in buffer (2).
