TMV (2) causes diseases in a broad variety of plant species. It has no known true vectors, but on rare occasions it is transmitted inefficiently by chewing insects. It is normally transmitted mechanically. It is best known for the contributions to virology which have been achieved through studies with TMV. It exhibits disease in many plant species, although it is not always clear whether it is the type strain or other tobamoviruses which are described. In tobacco the virus elicits a mosaic but may also cause veinbanding. The virus is known to infect at least 199 species from 30 plant families.
